Language Learner mode uses HSK 1 through HSK 7-9 for Simplified Chinese, TOCFL Novice 1, Novice 2, and Levels 1 through 5 for Traditional Chinese, JLPT N5 through JLPT N1 for Japanese, and CEFR A1 through CEFR C2 for German.
Choose a Difficulty
Learner tracks are ordered from easiest to hardest. Native mode offers Native 1 through Native 10 based on word frequency, from common vocabulary to rarer terms.
Explore every learner and Native level, then open a ready-to-play preset for the language you are studying.
Harder vocabulary earns more. Language Learner levels scale from 1 to 10 base points. Native 1 starts at 15 points and each level adds 5 points, reaching 60 points at Native 10.
Consecutive correct answers build your combo. Combo 5 adds 3 seconds, Combo 12 adds 5 seconds, Combo 20 adds 7 seconds, and every 10 correct answers from Combo 30 through Combo 100 adds 10 seconds.
Every wrong answer removes 10 seconds and resets the combo to zero. Fast guessing can therefore end a run sooner than careful recognition.
Every combo time-bonus milestone also awards one random lifeline. Lifelines fill the lowest empty slot, duplicates are possible, and you can hold up to nine at once. If every slot is full, you still receive the bonus time.
Tap an active lifeline, or press its numbered slot from 1 to 9 on desktop. Passive lifelines activate automatically.
Removes half of the remaining distractor tiles, leaving the correct answer on the board.
Your first wrong selection is removed without a time penalty or combo reset, giving you one more attempt. Only one can trigger per puzzle.
Briefly highlights the row or column containing the correct answer, choosing the direction with the most visible options.
Replaces the current puzzle without awarding points. The rerolled puzzle stays in your review but does not affect correct answers, incorrect answers, accuracy, score, or combo.
Play on a 4x4 board with 12 answers and three minutes on the clock. Standard mode uses the normal score for your selected vocabulary level.
Expand the board to 6x6 with 32 answers and multiply every score award by 2.
Start with only 90 seconds and multiply every score award by 2.5. Rampage and Berserk can be combined for a 6x6, 90-second run with a 5x score multiplier.

Yes, when the language combination is available. Changing direction alters the cue you see in the center and can reveal vocabulary that is easy to recognize in one direction but difficult in the other. Practicing both directions creates a stronger connection between the terms.

How to Play EssayRampage
EssayRampage is a timed writing game: look at an image, write about it in your target language, and earn points for the vocabulary you use. Practice in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or Japanese, with or without an account.

Choose a language and reveal the image
Select your writing language, then press “Start to reveal the image”. Use the short thinking countdown to notice the people, objects, and actions you could describe.

Write before time runs out
When the writing timer begins, type your own sentences about the scene. Start with words you know and connect them into a description or short story. A few clear sentences are a useful place to begin.

Finish your sentences and submit
End your sentences with punctuation such as 。, ！, ？, a period, an exclamation mark, or a question mark. Text after the last sentence-ending mark is saved but does not score. Choose “Submit Essay” when you are ready, or let the timer submit it automatically.

Review the vocabulary you used
The review page shows the image, your essay, your final score, and matched vocabulary with its points. More difficult vocabulary earns more points. The score measures recognized vocabulary; it does not grade grammar, factual accuracy, or how closely your essay describes the image.
Why writing helps vocabulary recall
Writing asks you to retrieve words from memory to express an idea. This is active recall: you see something in the picture, decide what you want to say, and find the words yourself. Putting those words into sentences also gives you practice connecting vocabulary with a meaningful situation.
Pay attention to words you wanted to use but could not remember. After submitting, look them up, check how they are used, and write a new sentence with them. Revisit them in a later session to practice retrieving them again. Short, regular writing sessions can help make familiar vocabulary easier to use when you need it.
