HSK 4 Vocabulary Introduced at This Level
HSK 4 has a cumulative target of 2,000 numbered vocabulary entries, including the HSK 1 through HSK 3 foundations. The official Level 4 block adds 1,000 entries, while 17 earlier headwords introduce an additional meaning or grammatical use at Level 4. Two same-headword and same-reading sense pairs consolidate into shared entries, so this sense-aware table contains 1,015 playable Level 4 prompts without repeating earlier-level prompts. Review the HSK 3 foundation.

What Does HSK 4 Vocabulary Cover?
HSK 4 extends the revised HSK 3.0 syllabus to a cumulative target of 2,000 numbered entries. Its vocabulary supports more detailed communication about work, education, travel, health, media, relationships, social situations, opinions, causes, and consequences, along with more complex written Chinese.
The HSK 4 game selects correct answers from prompts introduced at Level 4. Practice the earlier levels separately when you also want to refresh their foundations. View the official HSK syllabus.
How to Study HSK 4 with the Game
Use short Standard-mode sessions to establish reliable recognition before adding more distractors with Rampage. At HSK 4, review correct answers that took unusually long as well as mistakes: hesitation often reveals vocabulary that is familiar but not yet automatic.
Vocabulary recognition is only one part of HSK preparation. Combine it with listening, pronunciation, grammar, sentence building, reading longer passages, character writing, and practice using the examination format offered by your test center.
HSK 4 Test Format, Duration, and Passing Score
The established paper and the revised HSK 3.0 pilot do not use exactly the same format, so identify the version attached to your test date.
Established format
Listening, reading, and writing: 100 questions in the published HSK 2.0 Level 4 paper.
Duration
About 105 minutes for the established paper. The September 2026 HSK 3.0 pilot lists roughly 85 minutes written plus a roughly 20-minute oral test.
Passing score
180 out of 300 for the established HSK 2.0 paper. Confirm the rules for a revised pilot.

HSK 4 Vocabulary Practice FAQ
HSK 4 is a recognizable intermediate milestone, and some universities, scholarships, and employers cite it in their requirements. It can also mark the point where graded reading, simpler native material, and everyday interaction become more accessible. That makes it a useful target, but passing HSK 4 does not by itself prove broad fluency or guarantee that you meet a particular institution’s requirement.
The official comparison published for the older HSK 2.0 system labeled HSK 4 as CEFR B2, but HSK and CEFR assess different skill profiles and the comparison is widely treated as approximate rather than an exact equivalence. Do not automatically label revised HSK 3.0 Level 4 as B1 or B2 either. Use the specific HSK or CEFR requirement stated by your university or employer.
No. HSK 4 can represent useful intermediate ability: you may manage familiar conversations, routine tasks, and increasingly substantial reading or listening. Fluency is broader and depends on spontaneous speaking, listening to natural speech, reading outside the syllabus, writing, and the topics you need. Someone who studied mainly for the test may have a very different real-world level from someone who also used Chinese every day.
HSK 4 is a meaningful step up because it assumes the earlier levels and tests longer listening and reading material, a larger vocabulary, grammar, and writing under time pressure. Many learners find listening without subtitles or transcripts especially revealing. It is manageable when your HSK 1–3 foundation is automatic and you have practiced the exact paper format, rather than only memorizing translations.
There is no reliable number of months for everyone. Reaching HSK 4 in five months can be possible for a learner with prior Chinese knowledge, intensive daily study, immersion, or strong related-language experience, but it is not a useful default expectation from zero. Track retained vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading speed, writing, and repeated timed-paper results instead of judging progress only by the calendar.
First make slow or forgotten HSK 1–3 vocabulary automatic, then learn HSK 4 words in sentences rather than as isolated translations. Add audio-only listening, graded reading that is slightly challenging, sentence production, character input or handwriting for your test format, and timed section practice. A short deadline should narrow your priorities, not tempt you to skip the listening, grammar, and writing skills that the exam actually assesses.
Knowing a word when reading a list is different from recognizing it instantly in continuous speech or a timed passage. Common gaps include relying on visual cues while listening, reading too slowly, weak sentence production, unfamiliarity with the writing input method, and poor pacing. Diagnose readiness with complete official sample papers under test conditions, then train the weakest section separately.
HSK 4 does not have one worldwide price. Fees vary by country, test center, and delivery format. For the September 2026 HSK 3.0 pilot, Level 4 must be registered with its corresponding oral test, and the official notice prices that combination like HSK 2.0 Level 4 plus HSKK Intermediate. Check the amount and refund rules with your selected center before paying.
The revised HSK 3.0 syllabus gives HSK 4 a cumulative target of 2,000 numbered vocabulary entries. The Level 4 block adds 1,000 entries to the earlier 1,000. It also assigns 17 new Level 4 senses to earlier headwords; two same-form sense pairs share prompt groups, giving RadicalRampage 1,015 playable Level 4 prompts.
The official vocabulary target is cumulative, so HSK 4 builds on HSK 1 through HSK 3. RadicalRampage keeps gameplay levels separate: the HSK 4 preset selects correct answers introduced at Level 4, while the earlier presets practice their respective foundations.
Yes, if you want broader conversation, faster natural listening, independent reading, academic study, or professional Chinese. HSK 4 is a useful foundation rather than an endpoint. Continue with higher-level vocabulary and grammar, but also expand beyond exam material through conversations, extensive reading, audio made for native speakers, and content connected to your own interests or work.
