How HSK 1 Practice Works

The game focuses on rapid written recognition: seeing an English meaning and identifying its matching Simplified Chinese form.

1

Read the prompt

An English meaning appears in the center of the board, surrounded by possible Chinese answers.

2

Match the Chinese word

Choose the correct written form quickly. Accurate streaks build your combo and can earn bonus time.

3

Review uncertain words

After the game, inspect each board and use available pinyin, translations, selections, and answer times to find weak vocabulary.

What Does HSK 1 Vocabulary Cover?

HSK 1 introduces a cumulative target of 300 words in the revised HSK 3.0 syllabus published in November 2025 for implementation from July 2026. The beginner vocabulary covers immediate communication needs such as greetings, personal information, family, numbers, dates, food, shopping, school, locations, and common daily activities.

RadicalRampage uses imported learner data and applies playability filters, so this page and game are not a replacement for the official vocabulary list or examination syllabus. View the official HSK syllabus.

How to Use the Game in Your HSK Study

Begin with Standard mode and concentrate on accuracy. Repeat short sessions until familiar words feel immediate rather than guessed, then use the review to revisit slow or incorrect answers. Rampage adds more distractors when the standard board becomes comfortable.

Written word recognition is only one part of HSK preparation. Combine it with listening, pronunciation, character writing, grammar, reading, and sentence-level practice for balanced progress.

2026 syllabus update

What Changed for HSK 3.0 in 2026?

The revised official syllabus was published in November 2025 and is marked for implementation from July 2026. It turns the earlier nine-band proficiency framework into a concrete examination syllabus with level-specific vocabulary, character-recognition, writing-character, and grammar requirements.

HSK 1 now targets 300 words

The former HSK 2.0 Level 1 list contained 150 words. The 2021 proficiency framework was often summarized as a 500-word first band, but the revised 2025 examination syllabus sets the actual HSK 1 list at 300 words. This page follows that revised 300-word list.

The beginner test remains listening and reading

The official HSK 1 structure lists 40 questions: 20 listening and 20 reading questions. The test takes about 40 minutes including personal-information time, and 120 out of 200 points is the passing score. There is no separate HSK 1 writing section.

2026 is a transition year

HSK 3.0 was piloted at selected test centers on January 31, 2026. The official pilot notice also states that regular 2026 examination dates continue using HSK 2.0 until the formal HSK 3.0 launch is announced separately. The syllabus date alone therefore does not guarantee which version a particular test center will administer—confirm the format when you register.

HSK 1 Test Format, Duration, and Passing Score

These figures describe the currently established HSK 2.0 Level 1 paper. Revised HSK 3.0 pilot arrangements can differ.

Format

40 questions across listening and reading. The established Level 1 paper has no writing section.

Duration

About 40 minutes in total, including approximately five minutes for personal information.

Passing score

120 out of 200 for the established HSK 2.0 paper.

Check your registration notice if you are taking an HSK 3.0 pilot, because its sections and timing may not match the established paper.

HSK 1 Vocabulary Practice FAQ

Yes, in the revised examination syllabus published in November 2025 for implementation from July 2026. The older HSK 2.0 Level 1 list had 150 words, while the 500-word figure commonly seen online comes from the broader 2021 proficiency framework. RadicalRampage follows the revised 300-word HSK 1 examination list.

Do not assume so from the year alone. The official January 2026 pilot notice says regular 2026 examination dates continue using HSK 2.0 until the formal HSK 3.0 launch is announced separately. Ask your test center which syllabus and paper format apply before registering.

No separate writing section is listed in the official HSK 1 test structure. HSK 1 contains listening and reading questions, although the wider revised syllabus still defines character and grammar knowledge that learners should build for later levels.

No. The 500-word first-band list belongs to the 2021 proficiency framework that circulated before the revised examination syllabus was published. This page uses the newer 300-word HSK 1 list from the November 2025 syllabus.
