How JLPT N5 Practice Works

The game focuses on rapid written recognition: seeing an English meaning and identifying its matching Japanese form.

1

Read the English prompt

An English meaning appears in the center, surrounded by possible Japanese answers.

2

Recognize the Japanese word

Choose the matching kana or kanji form quickly. Accurate streaks build your combo and can earn bonus time.

3

Review readings and mistakes

After the game, inspect readings, translations, selections, and answer times without the timer running.

What Does JLPT N5 Cover?

N5 is the easiest JLPT level. It measures whether a learner can understand some basic Japanese, including typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji used in daily life.

The official competence summary also expects learners to follow short, slowly spoken conversations about familiar classroom and everyday situations. Vocabulary recognition is therefore only one part of N5 preparation.

Why Does This N5 List Have 662 Entries?

The current JLPT does not publish an official N5 vocabulary list or required word count. Radical Rush’s imported study source contains 662 distinct N5 Japanese targets, and this page exposes every one of those playable entries.

Some entries have multiple ordered English meanings, which are combined in one table row. The 662 total counts Japanese answer targets rather than separate translations, and it should not be interpreted as an official exam requirement. Read the official JLPT explanation.

JLPT N5 Test Format, Duration, and Passing Score

Passing score

80 out of 180 overall, plus at least 38 in language knowledge/reading and 19 in listening.
