How JLPT N3 Practice Works

The game focuses on rapid written recognition: seeing an English meaning and identifying its matching Japanese form.

1

Read the English prompt

An English meaning appears in the center, surrounded by possible Japanese answers.

2

Recognize the Japanese word

Choose the matching kana or kanji form quickly. Accurate streaks build your combo and can earn bonus time.

3

Review readings and mistakes

After the game, inspect readings, translations, selections, and answer times without the timer running.

What Does JLPT N3 Cover?

N3 measures whether a learner can understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree. It bridges the basic language emphasized at N4 and N5 with the broader comprehension expected at N2 and N1.

Learners should be able to understand everyday texts, grasp summary information such as newspaper headlines, and follow coherent daily conversations spoken at near-natural speed. Vocabulary recognition remains only one part of that preparation.

Why Does This N3 List Have 1,797 Entries?

The current JLPT does not publish an official N3 vocabulary list or required word count. Radical Rush’s imported study source contains 1,797 distinct N3 Japanese targets, and this page exposes every one of those playable entries.

This is the N3-specific source set rather than a cumulative total from easier levels. Some entries have multiple ordered English meanings, which are combined in one table row, so 1,797 counts Japanese answer targets rather than separate translations. Read the official JLPT explanation.

JLPT N3 Test Format, Duration, and Passing Score

N3 bridges the basic and advanced JLPT levels and requires passing every scoring section as well as the total.

Format

Vocabulary (30 minutes), grammar and reading (70 minutes), and listening (40 minutes).

Duration

140 minutes of test time, excluding instructions and breaks.

Passing score

95 out of 180 overall, plus at least 19 in language knowledge, reading, and listening.

For tests from December 2025 onward, a passing total of 104 or higher receives a B1 CEFR reference indication; 95–103 receives A2.
